Brass Pin Wreck

This site represents a wooden sailing vessel with metal composite components from the late 1800s, possibly identified at the vessel Slobodna, built in 1884 and sunk on Molasses Reef in 1887.

A team of divers from Indiana University completed a rapid assessment for this site on May 13th, 2021.  The assessment included general information about the site, its location, and its infrastructure. Archaeological information about the site features observed and documented on the site were included. A biological assessment of the site was provided, along with the vertebrates and invertebrates observed and identified on the site.

This field project and report was made possible through the collaborative efforts of NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and students and faculty from Indiana University’s Center for Underwater Science.
