Our field program based in Alpena, Michigan will focus on the maritime cultural landscape of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. We will be looking at shallow historic shipwrecks within the sanctuary and exploring the local maritime heritage. A lab fee will be assessed with registration to cover all research diving costs, accommodations, and diving equipment. Students must provide their own round-trip transportation to Alpena and food. Open Water Certification dives available during project.
Indiana University’s Academic Diving Program will provide students with all the necessary scuba equipment to be successful in the field. Dates will be arranged for gear check out during final exams week. Students will be responsible for providing their own skin diving equipment (masks, fins, and snorkel).
Please contact Sam Haskell (sihaskel@indiana.edu) for further course or diving information and Kirsten Hawley (kmhawley@indiana.edu) for information about active research.
