Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
Our research in Florida focuses on park development and documentation, assessment, and monitoring of dive sites frquented by divers in the Keys. Indiana University was instrumental in the development of San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve and assisted NOAA in establishment of the Shipwreck Trail. Indiana University students and faculty conduct annual research in the Florida Keys every year to study the archaeology and biology of the Florida reefs.
Currently, the Center for Underwater Science is working closely with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary's Maritime Heritage Program to conduct assessments and monitoring of shipwreck sites on the FKNMS Shipwreck Trail using modern 3D photogrammetric data combined iwth historic, archival data collected by Indiana University over the last 30 years.
