Biography

Hannah-Marie is a coral reef ecologist and research affiliate with the Center for Underwater Science, where she specializes in the biology of shipwrecks in the Dominican Republic. She is a current PhD student at Florida International University (FIU), in the Santos Seascape Ecology Laboratory.  While she does not have a defined project as of yet, she is assisting with other projects in the lab, mainly on a NOAA SeaGrant in Culebra, Puerto Rico. This type of work consists of identifying benthic substrates (coral species, algae, sand, rubble, etc) from orthomosaics and using Coral Point Count software to determine coral coverage. Additionally, she is a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, and enjoys spending her time recreationally diving on the plethora of South Florida’s shipwrecks.

Hannah-Marie interned in the summer of 2021 at Mote Marine Laboratories International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration in Summerland Key, FL. While there, she grew her knowledge on coral physiology and husbandry
While at IU Hannah-Marie specialized in the research of Dendrogyra cylindrus, Pillar Coral, a critically endangered species that appears in unusually large numbers in the Dominican Republic.
